Comments were submitted to the State of Washington by American Cochlear Implant Alliance on November 29, 2012 as part of a Washington State Technology Assessment of cochlear implantation. The assessment may be used by the state to make decisions about Medicaid coverage.
Questions relating to bilateral cochlear implants were posed that explored a range of topics including improved sound detection and functional status provided by bilateral over unilateral cochlear implants; safety; effectiveness as a function of age and time interval between first and second implant; and cost effectiveness of bilateral cochlear implants.
American Cochlear Implant Alliance participated in this effort because we felt it was important to provide our input as this decision could affect access to bilateral cochlear implantation for low -income children, both in Washington State and in other states that may view the decision and determine Medicaid coverage for bilateral cochlear implants based upon what Washington has decided.
