The Early Hearing Detection and Intervention Act was introduced in the Senate last Friday by Senators Portman (R-Ohio) and Gillibrand (D-NY). ACI Alliance had partnered with others in the hearing loss community to encourage reauthorization of the Act. We made this legislation the centerpiece of our October 14 legislative day: ACI Alliance on the Hill. Our Ohio and NY advocates met with staff from the offices of the two sponsoring Senators and emphasized the importance of this bill to help children with hearing loss receive the best possible early start in life. We are pleased and proud of the contributions that all of our advocates made in advancing awareness about early identification of, and intervention for, hearing loss in newborns.
It is expected that the bill will be taken up by the Senate HELP Committee after the holiday recess, which is the next step in the process. We will let you know what follow-up would be helpful at that time. Since Congress is now in recess, there is nothing to do at this point except smile knowing our advocates work made a difference in the progress of reauthorization of this critical bill.
