Advocacy Group to Host World Premiere of Documentary "The Listening Project"

WASHINGTON (February 22) -- Next month, the American Cochlear Implant Alliance will host the premiere of The Listening Project, a documentary co-created by renowned audiologist Jane Madell and Emmy Award-winning and Academy Award-nominated filmmaker Irene Taylor Brodsky. The film profiles 15 young adults who were born deaf but can now hear, thanks to cutting-edge technologies, including cochlear implants.

"The Listening Project shows that nothing is impossible for deaf kids," Madell said. "Thanks to years of determination and hard work -- and with an assist from some innovative technology -- these young adults have built lives and careers the world may not have thought were possible for them."

The film's stars are 15 deaf twenty- and thirty-somethings who rely on groundbreaking medical devices to hear. Most received cochlear implants -- electronic hearing devices that bypass a wearer's ears and send auditory signals directly to the brain.

Some received their devices as young children, while others did not get them until they were teenagers. All underwent years of therapy with Madell in order to acclimate their brain to hearing and learn to speak. They've gone on to build successful careers as doctors, business analysts, neuroscientists, musicians, and audiologists, among other pursuits. Most speak like they've never had a hearing loss.

"The young people in The Listening Project offer an example that all of us can aspire to, both those with hearing loss and those without," said Donna Sorkin, executive director of the American Cochlear Implant Alliance. "The future for deaf children today is even brighter, as cochlear implant technology has improved rapidly since the stars of the film were kids."

The trailer for The Listening Project can be found here. The film will premiere Friday, March 9 at 5 p.m., at the ACI Alliance's CI2018 Emerging Issues in Cochlear Implantation Conference at the Omni Shoreham Hotel in Washington, D.C.

ACI Alliance to Support Member Survey Activities

In an effort to support and advance research activities by our members, ACI Alliance is initiating a new service to assist our members to collect information from other CI clinicians and investigators on the CI process, outcomes, access barriers and research needs. Twice every year—in February and in August—we will solicit and electronically distribute surveys that have been submitted by members. We expect this will result in valuable publications as well as presentations at our meetings. The first survey cycle will be published in a blast to our members (and also placed on the website under the Research tab) on Tuesday, February 20. The next round will be published in six months (in August 2018) with reminders sent in July 2018. Plan ahead. Long surveys that take more than 10 minutes to complete will have lower response rates.

If you wish to take advantage of this opportunity, send an email with the following information no later than February 12 to our executive director Donna Sorkin (dsorkin@acialliance.org). Your email should include the following information about the survey that you wish for us to publish:

Survey title

Brief paragraph about the survey

Audience if there is a specific audience (i.e., audiologist, surgeon, speech pathologist, educator, psychologist, researcher, etc.).

Link to the completed survey (allowing us to review the survey in advance). We recommend being prudent about survey length to ensure best results.

In an effort to introduce and test the process, Sandra Prentiss PhD, an audiologist at the University of Miami has constructed a survey which she hopes audiologists will complete. The survey results will be presented at the upcoming CI2018 DC conference as part of the Emerging Issue “CI Candidacy in 2018.” Visit https://www.acialliance.org/page/MemberSurveys

Survey Model
Title: Contemporary procedures used to evaluate cochlear implant candidates
Summary: The purpose of this survey is to collect information regarding test procedures and test materials that are currently being used to determine cochlear implant candidacy for adults.
Audience: CI audiologists working with adults

Early Intervention Act Passes Congress

American Cochlear Implant Alliance is pleased to announce that today (October 3), the Early Hearing Detection and Intervention (EHDI) Act (S. 652) passed the U.S. House of Representatives after earlier passage in the Senate and is now headed to the President to be signed into law. The EHDI Act is bipartisan legislation that will help ensure continued funding and support for early detection, diagnosis, and treatment of hearing loss in newborns, infants, and young children.

ACI Alliance strongly supported this legislation and has worked closely with the bill’s champions in the House (Representatives Brett Guthrie, R-KY and Doris Matsui, D-CA) and in the Senate (Senators Rob Portman, R-OH and Tim Kaine, D-VA) to advance the bill through Congress. ACI Alliance worked on language that was incorporated into the legislation that emphasizes the importance of parents receiving accurate and comprehensive information about the hearing technology and communication options available to their child. The bill also expands EHDI-related grants to include children younger than three, in addition to newborns and infants. Our membership visited with legislative offices throughout the past three years and continued to contact Members of Congress to emphasize the importance of this legislation. ACI Alliance thanks our bill champions in Congress as well as our coalition partners, members, and advocates for their work to pass this needed legislation.

We are delighted to announce that the US House and Senate have agreed upon bill language for proposed Newborn Hearing Screening legislation. ACI Alliance members urged their national legislators to support passage and we partnered with a number of organizations in the field of hearing loss on the bill language. We are proud that our suggested language on technology and communication options was retained with specific mention of cochlear implants and other hearing technologies. In the next 10 days, we will share information with you on how to encourage your elected officials to support passage of this important legislation.
