Opening Speaker | Lou Ferrigno

We are pleased to announce that Lou Ferrigno, popularly known as The Incredible Hulk, will help us open the upcoming CI conference. The Incredible Hulk is a trademark of Marvel Characters, Inc. Lou is an American actor, fitness trainer, and inspiration to several generations of film and TV fans. He recently received a cochlear implant. He is candid about the challenges he faced given his childhood hearing loss and how he overcame them.

In February 2021, Lou, received a cochlear implant. We were fortunate enough to interview him. ACI Alliance Executive Director Donna Sorkin and Lou discuss his lifelong hearing loss and why he went forward with a cochlear implant at age 69.

A WELCOME FROM THE CHAIRS

SCIENTIFIC PROGRAM

Emerging Issues to be Explored

1. Results may vary: understanding the mechanisms behind the broad range in CI performance - Abstracts focused on examining the variations in performance and novel ways to address this that involve multiple specialties within the cochlear implant team.
2. Grassroots Expansion of Cochlear Implantation – Abstracts focused on expanding access to cochlear implants in the community, supporting private practice CI centers, building community partnerships, and connecting with primary care providers.
3. What’s New in Clinical Trials and Translational Research? –Abstracts featuring research that is actively translating bench work into clinical settings OR is moving research from trials to populations. We are seeking abstracts featuring NIH sponsored, industry sponsored, investigator-initiated, and organization-sponsored trials in cochlear implantation.
4. Rethinking (Re)Habilitation and Education – Abstracts dealing with advances and variations of the types of rehabilitation services and education resources for adults and children, gaps in services, special considerations in these areas for adults and children with SSD, transitions in education for children, methods for providing more comprehensive (re)habilitation and education.

In addition to the above Emerging Issues, the conference will explore a range of topics relating to cochlear implants and other hearing technologies including (but not limited to):

  • Pediatric Cochlear Implantation
  • Surgical Techniques and Technologies
  • Objective Measures in Cochlear Implantation
  • Managing Bilingual Patients
  • Economics, Public Policy, Practice Management
  • Candidacy/Expanding Indications
  • Advanced Programming
  • Audiological Considerations
  • Cognition
  • Telemedicine
  • Single Sided Deafness (SSD)
  • Social and Emotional Impact
  • Surgical: Inner Ear Malformations
  • Complex Cases
  • Music

Dr. John Niparko Memorial Lecture:
The Evolution of Cochlear Implant Care

Dr. John Niparko Memorial Lecture  To recognize Dr. John K. Niparko’s enduring commitment to cochlear implant research and clinical care and honor his significant contributions to the field, ACI Alliance established a lecture to be given at the annual CI Symposium, a clinical research meeting whose purpose is to open pathways of education and dissemination of research and dialogue between clinicians, scientists and educators.

René Gifford PhD, CCC-A, an audiologist, researcher, and Professor in the Department of Hearing and Speech Sciences at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, will deliver the 2022 Niparko Lecture at the Opening Session on Thursday morning. Dr. Gifford is the Director of the Cochlear Implant Research Laboratory, Director of the Cochlear Implant Program in the Division of Audiology, and Director of Research for the National Center for Childhood Deafness and Family Communication (NCCDFC) at the Vanderbilt Bill Wilkerson Center.

Dr. Gifford has contributed notably to the evolution of CI care in wide-ranging ways including enhancing our knowledge of auditory perception via combined electric and acoustic stimulation, identifying patient-specific variables that may impact outcomes, and exploring spatial hearing abilities of individuals using hearing aids and cochlear implants. Dr. Gifford’s research, clinical care, and a large body of published work has helped evolve the way we provide cochlear implant care to patients of all ages. Her research has been NIH funded for nearly 20 years, she has published over 120 peer-reviewed articles and multiple book chapters, and she authored a book, now in its second edition, Cochlear Implant Patient Assessment: Evaluation of Candidacy, Performance, and Outcomes. She was a featured scientist on the National Public Radio, Science Friday broadcast Breakthrough: Portraits of Women in Science—Hearing a Whole New World. Dr. Gifford was awarded the 2015 “Louis M. DiCarlo Award for Recent Clinical Achievement” from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association, the 2017 “Vanderbilt University Chancellor's Award for Research” as well as the 2021 “Jerger Career Award for Research in Audiology” from the American Academy of Audiology.

As the ACI Alliance has grown in number and in reach, the awareness of the need to engage and support therapy practitioners and educators in a better way also has grown. The program will emphasize clinically-applicable, research-based information presented by experts followed by Continue the Conversation, an interactive discussion with speakers in a small group format.

Interactive Panels and Special Programs

• CDaCI (Childhood Development After Cochlear Implantation) [Thursday 5/19 - 10:20 AM] The Childhood Development after Cochlear Implantation (CDaCI) study was begun 20 years ago by Dr. John K. Niparko as a means for multiple CI centers to collaborate and conduct research on how deaf children develop after cochlear implantation and the factors that impact on outcomes.  Soon after the Food and Drug Administration approved cochlear implantation for children as young as 12 months of age. This NIH-funded multi-center, longitudinal, prospective study systematically compared outcomes of children who received cochlear implants to similarly aged hearing peers, in a nationally representative sample of pediatric implant candidates, across a variety of domains, including language development, auditory performance, psychosocial and behavioral functioning, and quality of life. This session will highlight challenges in pediatric cochlear implant research 20 years ago and how knowledge gained across multiple domains – speech recognition performance, speech and language skills, and psychosocial well-being – influenced both subsequent research and contemporary clinical practice.
Stump the Experts [Thursday 5/19 - 1:30 PM] will be a case-based session in which a multidisciplinary group of cochlear implant experts will weigh in on their assessment of complex cases. Discussion will involve treatment options, candidacy concerns, and suggestions for improved outcomes.
Women Advancing Treatment and Careers in Hearing (WATCH)[Thursday 5/19 - 4:15 PM] will follow keynote speaker Sarah Bowe’s talk on gender disparities in healthcare, where she discusses her work to identify and address gender disparities in academic institutions.
ACI Alliance Research, Advocacy and Awareness Initiatives: Moving the Field Forward [Friday 5/20 - 8:40 AM] will be convened Friday morning and involve a number of our members. We will begin with a brief business meeting to elect new board members. We will then cover key recent organizational initiatives including ACI Alliance on the Hill (Virtual), the Medicare NCD, Cost Effectiveness of Cochlear Implants in Children sponsored research, and more. Learn how ACI Alliance is working to advance access to CI and change awareness.
