Cochlear implants provide meaningful access to sound for those with more severe hearing loss. Even the most advanced hearing aids may not overcome the hearing difficulties associated with moderate to profound hearing loss. A cochlear implant bypasses the damaged areas of the cochlea and may provide improved hearing abilities for speech understanding and the perception of music and environmental sounds.

World Hearing Day | March 3
World Hearing Day is celebrated on March 3rd. This year, WHD highlights the theme "From communities to classrooms: hearing care for all children." The campaign focuses on two imperatives: Preventing avoidable childhood hearing loss and ensuring early identification of and care for children with ear or hearing problems. Schools and communities are natural entry points to reach children, parents, and teachers. By integrating hearing care into school health and child health programs, we can help children hear, learn, and succeed. Use #WorldHearingDayon social media.
Questions and answers to the most frequently asked questions about cochlear implants. Children and adults who are not sufficiently helped by hearing aids may benefit from cochlear implants. Unlike a hearing aid, which delivers amplified sound acoustically, a cochlear implant bypasses damaged hair cells in the cochlea and stimulates the remaining nerve fibers directly through the application of electrical current. A cochlear implant is a device for people whose hearing technology needs may be beyond hearing aids.

An IEP provides federally protected education and support for students (birth through age 22) with disabilities. It covers children who have a specific list of conditions and require specially designed instruction to meet these goals. A 504 plan provides equal access to services and aims to prevent discrimination against any student who meets the qualifications (including in post-secondary schools). All students who qualify for an IEP also qualify for a 504 plan. Know your rights and advocate for your kids!
Cochlear implant candidacy is usually determined through a combination of hearing tests, medical evaluations, and functional assessments. The goal is to find out whether a cochlear implant will provide significantly better hearing than hearing aids. ACI Alliance created a task force to determine adult and child candidacy with bilateral and single sided deafness. Infographics and papers can be viewed by clicking below.
Today 75% of children who fail the newborn hearing screen are referred into the early intervention system and complete diagnostic testing by 3 months of age. The aim of universal newborn hearing screening is to have all children receiving services no later than 6 months of age though many begin well before that.
The following are the stories of children and adults who received cochlear implants. Learn more about the cochlear implant community, as well as the CI process and outcomes from them.
The mission of the American Cochlear Implant (ACI) Alliance is to advance access to the gift of hearing provided by cochlear implantation through research, advocacy and awareness.
