Details

Mass Eye and Ear Eaton-Peabody Laboratories has four laboratories with walk-in sound chambers outfitted for live animal and/or fresh human cadaveric specimen experiments. Experiments related to cochlear implants include neurophysiological measurements in laboratory animals as well as mechano-acoustic measurements in human cadaveric specimens to test implantable microphones.

Human Temporal Bone Otopathology Laboratory

Also located on the 4th floor of Mass Eye and Ear, the Otopathology Laboratory is equipped with wet lab spaces for histological preparation, dissection of human cadaveric temporal bones and ear tissues, and dedicated workbenches for histological and molecular analyses. In addition to traditional celloidin-based histological processing, the lab has developed a cutting-edge workflow using reversible plastic polymers allowing faster processing of specimens with metal components (e.g., cochlear implant electrodes) while maintaining compatibility with molecular biology workflows. The lab houses an extensive archive of over 4,500 histologically processed human temporal bone specimens, now accompanied by a fully digitized collection of medical records.
