The University of Iowa Cochlear Implant Program was established in 1981 and was the first center in the United States to implant a multichannel cochlear implant system in 1983. With the introduction of multichannel devices, the Iowa Cochlear Implant Program began to expand this technology to include children and was the first clinic in the nation to implant a congenitally deaf child. Since that time, more than 4000 children and adults have been implanted at the UI Hospitals and Clinics. In addition, the Program has held a multiple-project grant through the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD), part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), since 1985. The Program has also been a crucial component of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) clinical trial process by providing strict data for device manufacturers seeking device approvals for use in the U.S. To date, the University of Iowa has one of the largest and most comprehensive databases in the field, following patients for more than 40 years.
