Study of 219 children implanted before age 37 months, including 39 implanted before age 12 months. Surgical and anesthesia complications, achievement of open-set speech discrimination and primary communications modes were primary outcome measures. Conclusion: Implantation of children under 37 months of age can be done safely, including those below age 12 months. Implantation below 12 months was positively associated with earlier open-set ability and oral-only communication.
