Congressional Members Brett Guthrie and Lois Capps introduced legislation on March 10 that would reauthorize the Early Hearing Detection and Reauthorization Act. American Cochlear Implant Alliance participated in a coalition effort that developed suggested legislative language. H.R. 1344 will reauthorize the federal authority for hearing tests and intervention programs for newborn babies, which were first authorized through the Newborn Infant Hearing Screening and Intervention Act of 1999. We are delighted that the coalition proposal included the ACI Alliance priority language which states that parents should receive comprehensive, accurate and evidence-based information on possible assistive hearing technologies (such as hearing aids, cochlear implants, and osseointegrated devices) and communication options (such as visual and sign language, listening and spoken language, or both). In 2013, ACI Alliance on the Hill participants first introduced the need for such language to improve the information provided to families after a child is identified with hearing loss. ACI Alliance will be providing guidance to our members on how to encourage passage of this important legislation.
The mission of the American Cochlear Implant (ACI) Alliance is to advance access to the gift of hearing provided by cochlear implantation through research, advocacy and awareness.
