American Cochlear Implant Alliance and Vanderbilt University Medical Center held its Pediatric Conference on December 11-13, 2014 in Nashville, TN at the Omni Hotel Nashville. 

The "Nashville Papers” are peer reviewed articles by authors who presented at the14th Symposium for Cochlear Implants in Children. These papers were generously published with Free and Open Access in Otology & Neurotology and we are grateful to Dr. John Niparko (editor) for encouraging and facilitating the sharing of this important research in our field.

The Scientific Program Chairs for the Nashville Symposium—Drs. David Haynes, Rene Gifford and Alejandro Rivas of Vanderbilt University Medical Center—organized the issue and, in their words, "selected some of the best presentations for publication. These selections represent a wide range of topics in the field of cochlear implantation including access, music perception, innovative surgical techniques, disparities, and quality outcomes. These carefully prepared manuscripts represent the state-of-the-art research in the field of cochlear implantation and should provide the reader with a concise review of these great works from some of the finest programs in the world.”

The overarching goal of this conference was to open the pathways of education, dissemination of research, and dialogue between clinicians, educators, and scientists with the intended outcome of improving identification, intervention, and long-term outcomes for children with cochlear implants. In line with this goal, the primary objectives included an interdisciplinary distribution of knowledge, research and awareness for pediatric cochlear implantation highlighting clinically translational research for audiologists, deaf educators, engineers, otologists, speech-language pathologists, and consumer advocates. Presentations covered all aspects of pediatric cochlear implantation from early identification of hearing loss, intervention, childhood language development, implant programming, outcomes, surgical issues and considerations, and future directions for research.
