Listening @ ACI Alliance | June 2024
Listening @ ACI Alliance

Listening is a vehicle for us to share information on cochlear implants and hearing loss with hearing healthcare providers, adult CI recipients (and those exploring CI), parents and family members interested in CI, educators who work with deaf and hard of hearing children, and anyone wanting to learn more about cochlear implants.

ACI Alliance is a not-for-profit organization created with the purpose of eliminating barriers to cochlear implantation by sponsoring research, driving heightened awareness and advocating for improved access to cochlear implants for people of all ages. There is a wealth of information on our website.

Our work at ACI Alliance follows our mission encompassing research, advocacy, and awareness. Accordingly, Listening covers all three.

We encourage you to share sign-up details for this free e-newsletter with patients, family members, colleagues or anyone who may be interested.

Captioning: Universal Design for Language Access

During COVID, many people relied upon virtual meet-ups like Zoom, Teams, and Google Meet for business meetings, family interactions, and even social events like book clubs and “parties.” After some initial trials, almost all of the virtual options implemented captioning to facilitate participation for those who are deaf or hard of hearing (and everyone else). Many people realized how helpful captioning was and began using it more in other settings. With the general public now more aware of how captioning benefits everyone, we’re seeing more opportunities for people with hearing loss.

Advocacy

June is CMV Awareness Month
Cytomegalovirus (CMV) affects approximately 1 per every 200 births in the United States and is the most common cause of non-hereditary hearing loss. Infants are infected due to exposure of the mother who often is unaware they had CMV due to the mild, cold-like symptoms in adults. CMV is responsible for hearing loss in 1 in 5 children who have no other known risk factor or cause. Hearing loss related to CMV may not be present at birth, but rather delayed in onset and hence would be missed by newborn hearing screening and may fluctuate or progress during childhood.

Costs of Severe to Profound Hearing Loss & Cost Savings of Cochlear Implants
Severe to profound hearing loss (SPHL) is a costly condition, with the primary driver being lost productivity. Medical costs were higher for cochlear implantation, however, the higher income earnings offset the higher medical costs. Overall, early implantation substantially reduced lifetime costs. Access to hearing health care and technology is critical given the documented benefits for language, education, and quality of life. Government and insurance policies should be modified to allow for equal access and coverage for hearing technology, which will ultimately reduce lifetime and societal costs.

Thematic Coverage and Readability of Online Patient Information on Cochlear Implant Care
The treatment of patients with a cochlear implant (CI) is usually an elective, complex and interdisciplinary process. As an important source of information, patients often access the internet prior to treatment. The quality of internet-based information regarding thematic coverage has not yet been analyzed in detail. Therefore, the aim of this study was to analyze the information on CI care available on the internet regarding its thematic coverage and readability.

The (in)visibility of deafness: Identity, stigma, quality of life and the potential role of totally implantable cochlear implants
Totally implantable cochlear implants (TICIs) present a novel opportunity—the ability for CI users to control the visibility of their deafness and thus control disclosure. This study explored the impact of stigma and categorised two core identities that CI users construct. Future directions include investigating potential CI candidates, to explore if TICIs may be a facilitator to CI uptake.
