Listening @ ACI Alliance
Listening is a vehicle for us to share information on cochlear implants and hearing loss with hearing healthcare providers, adult CI recipients (and those exploring CI), parents and family members interested in CI, educators who work with deaf and hard of hearing children, and anyone wanting to learn more about cochlear implants.
ACI Alliance is a not-for-profit organization created with the purpose of eliminating barriers to cochlear implantation by sponsoring research, driving heightened awareness and advocating for improved access to cochlear implants for people of all ages. There is a wealth of information on our
website
.
Our work at ACI Alliance follows our mission encompassing research, advocacy, and awareness. Accordingly, Listening covers all three.
We encourage you to share
sign-up
details for this free e-newsletter with patients, family members, colleagues or anyone who may be interested.

Hearing First | Starts Here Awareness Campaign
Increased awareness of newborn hearing screening (NHS) and the importance of hearing for brain development can reduce delays in amplification or implantation from years or months to those critical early weeks. When parents know what’s at stake, they act urgently.
With that in mind, the Starts Hear national awareness campaign launched to inform soon-to-be parents about newborn hearing screening. The campaign reaches hundreds of thousands of expectant moms where they spend time — on social media, YouTube, and pregnancy websites.

CMS Publishes Proposed Coverage Expansion for Cochlear Implants Under Medicare
We are pleased to announce that on July 6, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) published details on its proposed coverage expansion for cochlear implants. If adopted, Medicare would broaden candidacy criteria to allow individuals with hearing test scores of >40% and ≤60%. There is an opportunity for 30 days (due date August 5) to comment. If you haven’t done so already, we encourage our members to provide a simple statement acknowledging the thorough work of CMS and supporting the expansion criteria decision as presented.

ACI Alliance Submits Comments on EHDI
ACI Alliance submitted comments on the recent HRSA call for information on future program development of Early Hearing Detection and Intervention (EHDI) Program. We are longtime supporters of EHDI as it is one of the most crucial programs for identifying and supporting children who are deaf or hard of hearing and their families. Our comments address the need for additional support from HRSA to EHDI programs for distribution of accurate, unbiased information to parents; improving family to family support, and engagement of medically underserved communities.

Peering Into the Past and Future of Cochlear Implants as They Aid Over One Million Users
Cochlear implants have been the most successful of neural prosthesis, providing access to sound for one million deaf children and adults all over the world. Since their development in 1984, cochlear implants have enabled their users to recognize spoken words and sentences with clarity.
