Listening @ ACI Alliance | December 2024
Listening @ ACI Alliance

Listening is a vehicle for us to share information on cochlear implants and hearing loss with hearing healthcare providers, adult CI recipients (and those exploring CI), parents and family members interested in CI, educators who work with deaf and hard of hearing children, and anyone wanting to learn more about cochlear implants.

ACI Alliance is a not-for-profit organization created with the purpose of eliminating barriers to cochlear implantation by sponsoring research, driving heightened awareness and advocating for improved access to cochlear implants for people of all ages. There is a wealth of information on our website.

Our work at ACI Alliance follows our mission encompassing research, advocacy, and awareness. Accordingly, Listening covers all three.

We encourage you to share sign-up details for this free e-newsletter with patients, family members, colleagues or anyone who may be interested.

Webinar: Valuing Listening for Children who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing
Hearing loss in children is now routinely detected within the first week of life, diagnosed, and referred for early intervention services by six months. Such services include provision of hearing aids, cochlear implants, or bone-anchored solutions as well as access to parent-centered habilitation to maximize spoken language and other learning. This recorded webinar will provide guidance on how to support families and professionals to value hearing and help families to pursue listening and speaking for a young child with hearing loss.

Barriers to Cochlear Implant Uptake in Adults: A Scoping Review
Race, ethnicity, and reimbursement are policy and structural barriers. Public awareness and education are societal barriers. Referral and geographical challenges are forms of organizational barriers. Living context and professional support are interpersonal barriers. At the individual level, sound quality, uncertainty of outcome, surgery, loss of residual hearing, and irreversibility are all barriers to CI uptake. By organizing barriers into an ecological framework, targeted interventions can be used to overcome such barriers.
