Listening @ ACI Alliance
Listening is a vehicle for us to share information on cochlear implants and hearing loss with hearing healthcare providers, adult CI recipients (and those exploring CI), parents and family members interested in CI, educators who work with deaf and hard of hearing children, and anyone wanting to learn more about cochlear implants.
ACI Alliance is a not-for-profit organization created with the purpose of eliminating barriers to cochlear implantation by sponsoring research, driving heightened awareness and advocating for improved access to cochlear implants for people of all ages. There is a wealth of information on our website.
Our work at ACI Alliance follows our mission encompassing research, advocacy, and awareness. Accordingly, Listening covers all three.
We encourage you to share sign-up details for this free e-newsletter with patients, family members, colleagues or anyone who may be interested.

Congressman McKinley Retires
ACI Alliance is grateful to retiring Congressman David McKinley for his long-term support of cochlear implants and hearing health. His openness about his personal experience with hearing loss and having a cochlear implant helped show the nation what hearing technology can do to help someone pursue anything in life. He once said he would not have been able to serve in Congress without his cochlear implant. We thank him for all of his work and wish him the best on his new endeavors!

Stories from CI CAN Advocates

This month kicks off a new series that will highlight our CI CAN advocates and their CI journeys. Carol Halla has told her story before as a Veteran and has served as a moderator for Tuesday Talks. Below are her own words. You can find the complete story and more on our website.
"As a late deafened adult, I had used various hearing aids for many years. As my hearing loss progressed, I was no longer getting the benefit I needed from those HAs. I was just missing out on too much in my daily life. In 2009, one of my audiologists told me that I would be a strong candidate for two cochlear implants. I had a lot to learn about the whole process before making a decision."

Over a century of research has focused on improving our understanding of congenital cytomegalovirus (cCMV), yet it remains the most common congenital infection in the United States, affecting 3 to 6 per 1000 live born infants each year. Pregnancies affected by cCMV are at a heightened risk of spontaneous abortion and intrauterine fetal demise. Neonates born with cCMV are also at substantial risk for long-term neurodevelopmental sequelae and disability, including sensorineural hearing loss, even those born without clinically apparent disease.

NIH-Funded Study Uses AI to Improve Language for Children with Cochlear Implants
A new multicenter study will use artificial intelligence (AI) to analyze pre-surgical brain MRI scans to predict individual-level language outcomes in English- and Spanish-learning children up to four years after cochlear implantation. The long-term goal of the research is to customize therapy to maximize children’s hearing and language ability after receiving a cochlear implant.
