Listening @ ACI Alliance | July 2022
Listening @ ACI Alliance

Listening is a vehicle for us to share information on cochlear implants and hearing loss with hearing healthcare providers, adult CI recipients (and those exploring CI), parents and family members interested in CI, educators who work with deaf and hard of hearing children, and anyone wanting to learn more about cochlear implants.

ACI Alliance is a not-for-profit organization created with the purpose of eliminating barriers to cochlear implantation by sponsoring research, driving heightened awareness and advocating for improved access to cochlear implants for people of all ages. There is a wealth of information on our website.

Our work at ACI Alliance follows our mission encompassing research, advocacy, and awareness. Accordingly, Listening covers all three.

We encourage you to share sign-up details for this free e-newsletter with patients, family members, colleagues or anyone who may be interested.

Awareness

Representation Matters
Sam Mellert, a CI recipient and son of ACI Alliance Board Member Barbara Mellert, spoke at the Granite State College May 2022 Commencement. Sam shared his inspirational educational journey as a profoundly deaf person pursuing a college degree as an adult learner working full-time. Sam will be starting his MBA this fall, again while working full-time. Sam’s remarks demonstrate the opportunity afforded by his CIs as well as the strong parental and self advocacy throughout his childhood. Sam’s speech starts at the 38-minute mark in the video.

EHDI Reauthorization & Action Alert for Telehealth Waivers

EHDI Reauthorization Advances in the US Senate
The Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pension Committee recently passed the S. 4052 out of committee. It now moves to the Senate floor for consideration. We remain concerned that the funding authorization for HRSA has been cut, and we continue to work on a funding increase.  Please continue to promote our Action Alert on EHDI Reauthorization which you can find here.

Urge Congress to Make Permanent Telehealth Waivers
Ask Congress to make telehealth reimbursement for audiologists and speech language pathologists permanent! During the COVID-19 Public Health Emergency (PHE), the Centers for Medicaid and Medicare (CMS) provided extensive temporary waivers aimed at easing access to healthcare via telehealth. This included granting audiologists and speech-language pathologists (SLPs) authority to be reimbursed for services provided via telehealth. Click here for our Action Alert.

NIDCD Strategic Plan
The National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD) presented draft themes and goals for the 2022-2027 NIDCD Strategic Plan for public comment from May 2– May 31, 2022. The NIDCD anticipates that the finalized plan will be published on the NIDCD website in Fall 2022. Read the comments from American Cochlear Implant Alliance on the DRAFT NIDCD Strategic Plan 2022-202.

Guidelines for Best Practice in the Audiological Management of Adults Using Bimodal Hearing Configurations
Holder, Jourdan T.; Holcomb, Meredith A.; Snapp, Hillary; Labadie, Robert F.; Vroegop, Jantien; Rocca, Christine; Elgandy, Mohamed Salah; Dunn, Camille; Gifford, René H.
Clinics are treating a growing number of patients with greater amounts of residual hearing. These patients often benefit from a bimodal hearing configuration in which acoustic input from a hearing aid on 1 ear is combined with electrical stimulation from a cochlear implant on the other ear. The current guidelines aim to review the literature and provide best practice recommendations for the evaluation and treatment of individuals with bilateral sensorineural hearing loss who may benefit from bimodal hearing configurations.
