Listening @ ACI Alliance
Listening is a vehicle for us to share information on cochlear implants and hearing loss with hearing healthcare providers, adult CI recipients (and those exploring CI), parents and family members interested in CI, educators who work with deaf and hard of hearing children, and anyone wanting to learn more about cochlear implants.
ACI Alliance is a not-for-profit organization created with the purpose of eliminating barriers to cochlear implantation by sponsoring research, driving heightened awareness and advocating for improved access to cochlear implants for people of all ages. There is a wealth of information on our website.
Our work at ACI Alliance follows our mission encompassing research, advocacy, and awareness. Accordingly, Listening covers all three.
We encourage you to share sign-up details for this free e-newsletter with patients, family members, colleagues or anyone who may be interested.

Sam
Mellert, a CI recipient and son of ACI Alliance Board Member Barbara Mellert,
spoke at the Granite State College May 2022 Commencement. Sam shared his
inspirational educational journey as a profoundly deaf person pursuing a
college degree as an adult learner working full-time. Sam will be starting his
MBA this fall, again while working full-time. Sam’s remarks demonstrate the
opportunity afforded by his CIs as well as the strong parental and self
advocacy throughout his childhood. Sam’s speech starts at the 38-minute mark in
the video.

ACI Alliance joined a group of consumer organizations, hearing professional organizations, hearing aid manufacturers and retailers for the “Hear Well” campaign to change behavior so that a hearing wellness check becomes as routine as an annual exam for vision, dental, physical, mammogram/pap test or PSA test. We invite you to learn more about the positive benefits of healthy hearing.

My CI was switched on, now what?

You have finally reached the moment you’ve been waiting for—you had your cochlear implant processor switched on and you are starting to hear with the new device! Now the goal is to hear better. A lot of concepts may be introduced at this time: adapting to the new sound, auditory learning, and especially patience.

Tuesday
Talks are captioned and free to view. The inaugural series covered
late onset hearing loss in children and two talks on
understanding a mapping session (one for parents and one for adults). Each
webinar is moderated by members of our consumer network (CI CAN) who bring
their own personal experience with hearing loss and CI to the discussion. We
anticipate offering another series this fall, so stay tuned!

EHDI Reauthorization & Action Alert for Telehealth Waivers

EHDI Reauthorization Advances in the US Senate
The Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pension Committee recently passed the S. 4052 out of committee. It now moves to the Senate floor for consideration. We remain concerned that the funding authorization for HRSA has been cut, and we continue to work on a funding increase. Please continue to promote our Action Alert on EHDI Reauthorization which you can
find here.
Urge Congress to Make Permanent Telehealth Waivers
Ask Congress to make telehealth reimbursement for audiologists and speech
language pathologists permanent! During the COVID-19 Public Health Emergency
(PHE), the Centers for Medicaid and Medicare (CMS) provided extensive temporary
waivers aimed at easing access to healthcare via telehealth. This included
granting audiologists and speech-language pathologists (SLPs) authority to be
reimbursed for services provided via telehealth. Click here for our Action
Alert.

ACI Alliance has compiled a comprehensive bibliography of medical research done on the benefits of cochlear implantation for unilateral hearing loss. This list includes studies on both adult and children and has been utilized by clinics in educating insurance companies. For more information, click here.

Clinics are treating a growing number of patients with greater amounts of residual hearing. These patients often benefit from a bimodal hearing configuration in which acoustic input from a hearing aid on 1 ear is combined with electrical stimulation from a cochlear implant on the other ear. The current guidelines aim to review the literature and provide best practice recommendations for the evaluation and treatment of individuals with bilateral sensorineural hearing loss who may benefit from bimodal hearing configurations.
