Listening @ ACI Alliance
Listening is a vehicle for us to share information on cochlear implants and hearing loss with hearing healthcare providers, adult CI recipients (and those exploring CI), parents and family members interested in CI, educators who work with deaf and hard of hearing children, and anyone wanting to learn more about cochlear implants.
ACI Alliance is a not-for-profit organization created with the purpose of eliminating barriers to cochlear implantation by sponsoring research, driving heightened awareness and advocating for improved access to cochlear implants for people of all ages. There is a wealth of information on our website.
Our work at ACI Alliance follows our mission encompassing research, advocacy, and awareness. Accordingly, Listening covers all three.
We encourage you to share sign-up details for this free e-newsletter with patients, family members, colleagues or anyone who may be interested.

CI Recipient Theo Valles recently reported back on his experience at an international meeting on hearing loss and hearing healthcare access.
“At the summit, I met inspiring role models across a range of fields including Malala Yousafzai, the world’s youngest Nobel Peace Prize, BBC News Anchor News Lewis Vaughan Jones, WHO members, and many more. I also worked together with four other Ambassadors from UK, France, India, and Brazil to create a message of encouragement for world leaders to prioritize hearing health and committed to a series of awareness raising activities in the United States. This has been an incredible and rewarding once-in-a-lifetime experience for me.”

Tired of Being Tired: Managing Auditory Fatigue
Auditory fatigue presents in many ways. It can be challenges with paying attention. For others, it may be the feeling of being tired or unable to listen any more after a listening effort. Some experience a strong desire to be in a quiet space or away from other people or sounds. Auditory fatigue can happen regardless of age and is experienced by infants, children, adolescents, and adults of all ages.

Senator Blumenthal (D-CT) intends to introduce the Stop CMV Act of 2023
Sen. Blumenthal intends to introduce the Stop CMV Act of 2023. Once introduced and passed, this legislation would incentivize hospitals and other health care providers at the national level to screen babies for CMV within the first 21 days after birth. The Senator has long been interested in pediatric hearing issues. ACI Alliance is working with other organizations to ensure support for this critical issue.

A task force of individuals who support families of children who are deaf and hard of hearing recently completed a 5-month collaborative process to develop research-based messages on the benefits of listening for language development and literacy. The Listening è Language è Literacy initiative resulted in the development of an infographic designed to be widely used in supporting families of children who are deaf and hard of hearing and the professionals who serve them.

Connecticut Becomes Second State with Universal Screening for CMV
Beginning in 2025, Connecticut will become the second state to screen all newborns for CMV as a part of the newborn screening. Minnesota began screening in February 2023 and already a growing number of infants are being diagnosed with CMV who may not have been in other states without screening.

A new study authored by Ivette Cejas PhD and colleagues was published June 29 online in JAMA Otolaryngology. The research, supported by ACI Alliance with a grant from Oberkotter Foundation, demonstrates the impacts that cochlear implants have on children as they age into adolescence. A pilot grant awarded by AHRF and ACI Alliance set the stage for the work.

Single-Sided Deafness (SSD) Clinical Trial
Recruiting begins for a new single-sided deafness (SSD) clinical trial being conducted by UNC Investigators Drs Lisa Park and Kevin Brown. This study will investigate the impact of early cochlear implantation on hearing, learning, communication, and behaviors in children with SSD. Children who qualify and are under the age of three will receive a cochlear implant at no cost. They will be followed by UNC's study team for hearing testing and device programming until they reach age five. At that time, they will be tested on measures of language, hearing, learning, and behavior. The results will be compared to other five-year-old children who have typical hearing and to five-year-olds with SSD who have not received a cochlear implant.

American Cochlear Implant Alliance Task Force: Recommendations for Determining Cochlear Implant Candidacy in Adults
This research summarizes the current evidence for determining appropriate referrals for adults with bilateral hearing loss for CI evaluation. It also provides a standardized testing protocol for CI candidates using a team-based approach that prioritizes individualized patient care. The document was developed by the Adult Cochlear Implantation Candidacy Task Force of the American Cochlear Implant Alliance using review of the existing literature and clinical consensus. This research is currently paywall restricted. Additional materials supporting this article will be forthcoming. The abstract is available at the link below. Stay tuned for full access to the paper.
