Listening @ ACI Alliance | May 2023
Tuesday 2 May
Listening @ ACI Alliance

Listening is a vehicle for us to share information on cochlear implants and hearing loss with hearing healthcare providers, adult CI recipients (and those exploring CI), parents and family members interested in CI, educators who work with deaf and hard of hearing children, and anyone wanting to learn more about cochlear implants.

ACI Alliance is a not-for-profit organization created with the purpose of eliminating barriers to cochlear implantation by sponsoring research, driving heightened awareness and advocating for improved access to cochlear implants for people of all ages. There is a wealth of information on our website.

Our work at ACI Alliance follows our mission encompassing research, advocacy, and awareness. Accordingly, Listening covers all three.

We encourage you to share sign-up details for this free e-newsletter with patients, family members, colleagues or anyone who may be interested.

Telephones are Not Just for Texting
The Hearing Journal April 2023 issue included an article about tips on talking on the telephone. Many adults who receive a cochlear implant may not have used a telephone “to talk” in many years. Email is used by nearly everyone. Adults, and especially teens, with typical hearing may rarely talk on a telephone, preferring text messaging. Calling one’s adult child without notice is often met with “What’s wrong?” Young adults are accustomed to being warned via text for what may be viewed as an unwelcome intrusion when their cell phone rings. The pandemic taught all of us that in-person meetings (and telephone interactions) can be replaced by Zoom calls.

Arizona Senate Bill Could Expand Cochlear Implant State Medicaid Coverage
The Arizona Senate has passed a bill that aims to expand cochlear implant coverage for adults through Arizona’s Medicaid program. It would revive coverage of cochlear implants for anyone at least 21 years old who is covered for health and medical services under Arizona’s Health Care Cost Containment System. Currently, only children are covered. Advocates say SB 1017 could help those with hearing loss, save the state money in long-term health costs and combat unemployment. The bill, which passed the Senate on a 23-6 vote on March 21, is now being read in the House.

Why Do Candidates Forgo Cochlear Implantation?
Beyond providing substantial benefits in terms of speech recognition abilities, CIs have also been shown to improve emotional wellbeing, social engagement, and quality of life. However, despite these benefits, it is estimated that only 6%–10% of potential CI candidates are being evaluated for implantation. In addition to health care system-specific factors such as a lack of awareness and education amongst providers with regard to CI candidacy, patient-specific factors likely also play a major role in determining CI utilization.
