Listening @ ACI Alliance
Listening is a vehicle for us to share information on cochlear implants and hearing loss with hearing healthcare providers, adult CI recipients (and those exploring CI), parents and family members interested in CI, educators who work with deaf and hard of hearing children, and anyone wanting to learn more about cochlear implants.
ACI Alliance is a not-for-profit organization created with the purpose of eliminating barriers to cochlear implantation by sponsoring research, driving heightened awareness and advocating for improved access to cochlear implants for people of all ages. There is a wealth of information on our website.
Our work at ACI Alliance follows our mission encompassing research, advocacy, and awareness. Accordingly, Listening covers all three.
We encourage you to share sign-up details for this free e-newsletter with patients, family members, colleagues or anyone who may be interested.

Thank you to all who participated in CI2025 Boston Conference! We had a busy and productive week that kicked off with exciting symposia from Advanced Bionics, Cochlear, and MED-EL.
At the Opening Session, ACI Alliance Executive Director Donna Sorkin highlighted the conference program and participants from around the globe with 36 countries represented. We celebrated Dr. Bruce Gantz’s Lifetime Achievement Award and heard Dr. Nancy Young deliver an inspiring Niparko Memorial Lecture on “Language Prediction to Improve Outcomes for Children with Cochlear Implants". Thursday also had an interactive poster highlight session including a student poster competition and our opening reception in the exhibit hall – thank you to all our exhibitors. Congratulations to our Student Poster Competition Winners. CI2025 Student Poster Competition | Results Are In!! - American Cochlear Implant Alliance
On Friday, Dr. Paul Van de Heyning delivered an important keynote presentation on “Single-Sided Deafness and Frequency Allocation in Cochlear Implantation,” and we discussed ACI Alliance organizational priorities including advocacy and the election of new board members. Thank you to Dr. Andrea Warner-Czyz for your service as Board Chair, and congratulations to Dr. Daniel Zeitler as the newly elected Board Chair. Also, a thank you to Kevin Brown MD, PhD and Amy Lynn Birath AuD for their service to the board, as we welcome Douglas Sladen PhD, Ivette Cejas, PhD, and Jacob B. Hunter MD.
Panels throughout the week included content on advocacy related to proposed Federal cuts in programs that impact CI access, (Re)Habilitation Connect for pediatric and adult patients, a Stump the Experts panel, the latest on surgical techniques and outcomes, disparities in CI access, quality of life and outcomes for CI recipients, new sessions on emerging technologies, single-sided deafness candidacy and outcomes, a global hearing healthcare panel, and more. CI2025 also hosted four successful and growing Special Interest Group lunches for students, members with hearing loss, educators, and aural rehab. We closed it out with a field trip to Massachusetts Eye & Ear research lab.
Don't forget to submit for CEUs. Be on the lookout for selected abstracts to be available online in the next few weeks.

Late Onset Hearing Loss Awareness Week was established in May 2021 to shine a spotlight on a population of young children who go unnoticed and undiagnosed because they passed the newborn hearing screen but developed hearing loss later on. Sometimes these children are not discovered for months or years following the onset of their hearing loss.

Pediatric psychologist Dr. Ivette Cejas, with the University of Miami, said detecting his hearing loss early helped give him a better life. A recent study by Cejas, published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, found that children who get cochlear implants early have better academic performance, as well as better reading, writing and language skills, compared to children at or above the typical age and gender expectations.

Support EHDI and Medicaid
Over the 20+ years that EHDI has been existence, this bi-partisan effort to identify children with hearing loss at birth and provide them with early access to technology and intervention services has been successful in screening 98% of newborns within one month of life. This important accomplishment is now endangered by cuts being made in this critical program. An article this week in Time highlighted the issues in a very public way.

ACI Alliance has been meeting with key Congressional offices to discuss the impact of cuts on Medicaid and EHDI. You can support our efforts to save these programs by participating in our Action Alerts. We have had a tremendous result of 5,000 alerts send thus far, please let us reach our goal of 6,500 messages.

This book starts by discussing the anatomy and physiology of the inner ear. Then it delves deeper into hearing loss, how to prevent it, and the genetics behind it. Management of related symptoms such as hyperacusis and tinnitus is discussed, as well as current medical treatments and new immunological approaches to treating hearing loss. Furthermore, the most up-to-date hearing devices such as digital hearing aids, implantable bone conduction devices, and cochlear implants are discussed at great length.

Hearing Benefits of Cochlear Implantation in Older Adults With Asymmetric Hearing Loss
In this group of older adults with SSD or AHL, CI demonstrated significant benefits in hearing thresholds and speech recognition in the implanted ear. Moreover, the average of 9.3 hours of daily use suggests that patients' CI is tolerated and beneficial in this population.
