Listening @ ACI Alliance
Listening is a vehicle for us to share information on cochlear implants and hearing loss with hearing healthcare providers, adult CI recipients (and those exploring CI), parents and family members interested in CI, educators who work with deaf and hard of hearing children, and anyone wanting to learn more about cochlear implants.
ACI Alliance is a not-for-profit organization created with the purpose of eliminating barriers to cochlear implantation by sponsoring research, driving heightened awareness and advocating for improved access to cochlear implants for people of all ages. There is a wealth of information on our website.
Our work at ACI Alliance follows our mission encompassing research, advocacy, and awareness. Accordingly, Listening covers all three.
We encourage you to share sign-up details for this free e-newsletter with patients, family members, colleagues or anyone who may be interested.

Academy Research Conference 2024: Advances in Implantable Devices
The 2024 Virtual Academy Research Conference (ARC) will bring together the latest discovery in auditory implantable technology from an esteemed group of clinician-scientists in audiology and otology. They will be covering topics including advances in auditory implant surgery, asymmetrically driven neuroplasticity for bimodal and sequential bilateral cochlear implant (CI) recipients, the role of genetics in clinical decision-making for candidacy determination and recommended intervention, totally implantable technology, single-sided deafness (SSD), highly asymmetric hearing losses, and much more.

HearO Saves the Day! An Adventure in Music, Health, and Hearing Protection

This new book will teach young children how to protect their hearing. Written by Ear Peace Foundation, an educational nonprofit 501(c)3 organization dedicated to teaching our youth about Noise-Induced Hearing Loss (NIHL) and its prevention. NIHL is progressive, permanent, and typically painless type of hearing damage that results from overexposure to loud sound. It is also the only type of hearing loss that is 100% preventable.

Two Sisters with Progressive Hearing Loss Enjoy the Gift of Hearing Again
Read the story by mother, Jessica Salzberg, about her two children being born with progressive hearing loss and how cochlear implants helped them to hear again. She says, "It has been the biggest honor and blessing to watch our little girls become who they are today, and we are forever thankful for this life changing technology and the medical experts who have taken care of our family. We know that this is only the beginning for Leah and Sophie, and that together they will change the world."

Ask Congress to Support Expanded Telehealth Access Act

Ask Congress to Support Expanded Telehealth Access Act. Once passed, this law would make permanent telehealth care from audiologists and SLPs for Medicare beneficiaries. It only takes a few minutes to complete the action alert to ask Congress for their support.

Use of Speech-to-Text Translation Resources to Address Communication Barriers in Patients With Hearing Loss: A Systematic Review
Patients with concomitant limited English proficiency (LEP) and hearing loss may experience communication barriers, not fully mitigated by traditional interpreter services. Although there is no clear consensus on the most reliable and optimal resources for these patients, speech-to-text (STT) applications with translation capability may bridge these barriers. Small studies have suggested an acceptable level of accuracy for STT translation programs as adjunctive to standard of care services.

Cognitive Processing Speed Improvement After Cochlear Implantation
Untreated hearing loss has an effect on cognition. It is hypothesized that the additional processing required to compensate for the sensory loss affects the cognitive resources available for other tasks and that this could be mitigated by a hearing device.

What Do People Want to Know About Cochlear Implants: A Google Analytic Study
As an easily accessible repository for information, search engines, with the most widely used being Google, have been a frequent source for online health-related educational material. The top websites in the first few pages of search engines have been evaluated for the content and quality of medical information on specific topics based on keywords, such as “cochlear implant.” In this study, this feature was used to systematically analyze the most popular questions related to cochlear implantation and CI devices and we evaluated the readability and quality of the responses.

The Effect of What Adults Know and Think About Hearing Loss and Cochlear Implantation on Utilization Rates Across the United States
Cochlear implantation as a treatment option for adult hearing loss remains underutilized. Limited awareness extends beyond the general populace and includes healthcare professionals crucial to the detection and referral process. Despite overarching limited familiarity, patients’ perceptions surrounding cochlear implants are slowly becoming favorable.
