Listening @ ACI Alliance
Listening is a vehicle for us to share information on cochlear implants and hearing loss with hearing healthcare providers, adult CI recipients (and those exploring CI), parents and family members interested in CI, educators who work with deaf and hard of hearing children, and anyone wanting to learn more about cochlear implants.
ACI Alliance is a not-for-profit organization created with the purpose of eliminating barriers to cochlear implantation by sponsoring research, driving heightened awareness and advocating for improved access to cochlear implants for people of all ages. There is a wealth of information on our website.
Our work at ACI Alliance follows our mission encompassing research, advocacy, and awareness. Accordingly, Listening covers all three.
We encourage you to share sign-up details for this free e-newsletter with patients, family members, colleagues or anyone who may be interested.

American Academy of Pediatrics publishes Hearing Assessment in Infants, Children, and Adolescents: Recommendations Beyond Neonatal Screening
While the September 2023 AAP report has some merit in calling attention to the critical importance of hearing healthcare in children, noting CMV as one of the leading causes of childhood hearing loss, and emphasizing the key role of pediatricians in supporting families in their child’s hearing loss journey, it falls short in many respects and provides inaccurate information. Most notable is the lack of involvement in its development by hearing care clinicians (i.e., otolaryngologists, audiologists) and the biased way in which the report discusses findings on language modality outcomes and therapeutic follow-up. ACI Alliance will develop a detailed review of the report and we encourage others to do the same.

Listening—Language—Literacy Initiative Webinar in Delaware
This seminar will involve three experts—each with a specific focus on language learning and reading. To learn a language—be it aural or sign—children must have exposure to language that is rich in quantity and quality. Language nutrition emphasizes the importance of parents, other family members, and educators to talk, interact, read, and engage with their children. This is important for all children, but it is critical for children who are deaf and hard of hearing. Research demonstrates the impact of such parenting practices on literacy and a child’s future success.

Cochlear Implants Offer Teen Life-Changing Journey

Theo Valles was diagnosed with hearing loss at the age of two. He wore hearing aids, until he became profoundly deaf. Theo and his family went to see Ivette Cejas, Ph.D., Director of Family Support Services as part of the Children’s Hearing Program at UHealth, who says early intervention is key. “I could tell the difference immediately once I got used to them, how much clearer the sound was than when I had a hearing aid,” Theo says. Theo is doing so well he’s now a cochlear implant ambassador and advocated for access to hearing healthcare in London alongside Nobel Prize laureate Malala Yousafzai.

Increasing Cochlear Implant Awareness in Hearing and Primary Health Care
Supporting hearing health professionals to know when to refer a patient for a cochlear implant (CI) evaluation is a high priority for American Cochlear Implant Alliance (ACI Alliance). To advance that objective across the care continuum, the organization has enlarged its efforts to grow CI awareness among health care professionals outside of hearing health as well as those within the hearing health community who do not provide CI services. Camden and His Superpower Ears Go to a New School
Camden Has Superpower Ears! Having been born deaf, Camden now hears because of cochlear implants. He is so nervous about transferring to a new school, knowing he will have to explain his implants, hearing aids, and magnets on the sides of his head. He bravely tells his brand new classmates how his ears work and what it's like being deaf. The class learns that each one of us is different, and that is what makes us all so unique and very special.

ACI Alliance Supports Communications, Video, and Technology Accessibility (CVTA) Act
ACI Alliance has joined other organizations as a supporter of the Communications, Video, and Technology Accessibility (CVTA) Act. If passed, the legislation would ensure individuals with disabilities have equal access to mainstream communication platforms and the technology services needed to participate in professional, educational, recreational, and civic spaces. The CVTA bolsters standards for television programming and emergency communication, expands accessibility requirements—including closed captions and audio descriptions—to online platforms and video conferencing services, and equips the federal government with the ability to improve accessibility of emerging technologies. Please take a few minutes to send complete the Action Alert set up to urge Members of Congress to support these bills.

Another US Airport Getting in the Loop
Rhode Island's TF Green International Airport has recently signed a contract with Hearing Loop Systems of Holland, MI, a division of Parkway Electric and Communications, to loop the concourses and all twenty-two of the airports departure gates. They will also be installing counter loops at the airline ticket counters. It's anticipated that the installation will be completed sometime in the first quarter of 2024. This will be the 22nd US airport to offer this assistive listening technology to hard of hearing travelers.

The Children’s Hearing Institute Closing after Forty Years
Forty years ago Dr. Simon Parisier and his wife, Elaine created The Children’s Hearing Institute with the shared goal of not only restoring hearing to deaf children, but teaching them how to interpret sound and to develop speech. The Children’s Hearing Institute would like to announce that they have finished what they set out to accomplish. Children who are deaf and hard of hearing have access to more and more resources and technology and are now able to integrate into mainstream schools along with their hearing peers.

Twitter Perspectives on Cochlear Implantation: Sentiment and Thematic Analysis
While the majority of tweets on CI carried a positive tone, there are ongoing challenges with the stigma surrounding CI. Public perspectives of CI on social media may help clinicians counsel CI patients and elucidate issues that lead to newfound acceptance or ongoing stigma of CI in the general population.

Preliminary Evidence to Support a De-Escalated Cochlear Implant Programming Paradigm for New Adult Recipients: A Systematic Review
No standard schedule for cochlear implant (CI) programming has been developed, and common practices may have CI recipients seen in excess of what is necessary. The objective of this study was to review evidence for a de-escalated, evidence-based schedule for adult CI programming. Overall, there is a paucity of literature evaluating any form of evidence-based CI programming or follow-up. Most applicable data derive from longitudinal outcomes featured in studies of other CI features, with only a handful of studies directly evaluating CI programming strategies over time.
