Listening @ ACI Alliance
Listening is a vehicle for us to share information on cochlear implants and hearing loss with hearing healthcare providers, adult CI recipients (and those exploring CI), parents and family members interested in CI, educators who work with deaf and hard of hearing children, and anyone wanting to learn more about cochlear implants.
ACI Alliance is a not-for-profit organization created with the purpose of eliminating barriers to cochlear implantation by sponsoring research, driving heightened awareness and advocating for improved access to cochlear implants for people of all ages. There is a wealth of information on our website.
Our work at ACI Alliance follows our mission encompassing research, advocacy, and awareness. Accordingly, Listening covers all three.
We encourage you to share sign-up details for this free e-newsletter with patients, family members, colleagues or anyone who may be interested.

Individual Education Plan | FAQs and More

An IEP for a student who is hard of hearing addresses their individual communication and learning needs. The team takes into account the student’s language and communication style, social-emotional development, academic performance, and overall support needs. Based on this, the IEP outlines personalized goals, services, and supports—such as hearing technology or strategic classroom seating—to ensure the student has equal access to learning in the least restrictive environment.

Eligibility for VA Hearing Technology Assistance
Below is overview of who may qualify for a cochlear implant through the VA system. An evaluation by the VA will determine candidacy within the VA. We encourage Veterans who believe that they may be eligible for CI services to contact their local VA system for further information. Veterans must receive a hearing evaluation by a state-licensed audiologist to determine eligibility for hearing aids or cochlear implants and to establish medical justification for VA provision of these devices and related services.

The ITEM Coalition urges CMS to move forward with a much more robust and streamlined coverage pathway—similar to the Medicare Coverage of Innovative Technology (“MCIT”) framework—providing time-limited Medicare coverage for FDA-designated breakthrough technologies upon a determination that they are safe and effective. |
Results of this study concluded that COVID-19 did not delay cochlear implants for children—in fact, many got their second implant faster. Families, whether English- or Spanish-speaking, had equal access to hearing care.

Predictors of Early and Long-Term Sound Quality Ratings in Adult Cochlear Implant Recipients
People with cochlear implants noticed their sound quality improved for about 6 months after activation. Early sound quality was better if the implant was placed well and if the person had stronger word recognition before surgery.
