| What is a Hybrid Cochlear Implant (CI)? |
|
A hybrid cochlear implant is a hearing device for people with moderate to profound hearing loss that combines a cochlear implant and a hearing aid to maximize high- and low-frequency sound. Hybrid devices use a hearing aid to amplify residual low-frequency hearing while using a cochlear implant’s electrical stimulation for higher frequency sounds that may not benefit from traditional amplification. This combination supports clear speech understanding and a natural sound experience when listening to music.
What is the Process for Providing a Hybrid Cochlear Implant? The process is the same as that for a traditional cochlear implant. During cochlear implant surgery, a specially trained ENT surgeon inserts a thin electrode array into the cochlea, taking care to preserve natural hearing. After 2-4 weeks (sometimes less), the device is activated by an audiologist who fine-tunes the settings to balance input from the hearing aid and CI sound processor. Together, these systems provide clarity and a greater sound range.
