Listening @ ACI Alliance | July
Listening @ ACI Alliance

Listening is a vehicle for us to share information on cochlear implants and hearing loss with hearing healthcare providers, adult CI recipients (and those exploring CI), parents and family members interested in CI, educators who work with deaf and hard of hearing children, and anyone wanting to learn more about cochlear implants.

ACI Alliance is a not-for-profit organization created with the purpose of eliminating barriers to cochlear implantation by sponsoring research, driving heightened awareness and advocating for improved access to cochlear implants for people of all ages. There is a wealth of information on our website.

Our work at ACI Alliance follows our mission encompassing research, advocacy, and awareness. Accordingly, Listening covers all three.

We encourage you to share sign-up details for this free e-newsletter with patients, family members, colleagues or anyone who may be interested.

ACI Alliance, as part of the ITEM Coalition, provided comments in 2022 and 2023 to the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) on proposed rules on expanding accessibility and nondiscriminatory policies for people with disabilities. The final rules have recently been announced and we are pleased with the outcomes that lock in real improvements to the health care system. The key takeaways are:

For more information, you can review the final rules on Section 1557 and Section 504 on the HHS website.

US Dept of HHS Publishes New Rules Strengthening Nondiscrimination in Health Programs
  • Under the new rule for Section 1557 of the Affordable Care Act (ACA),  it is unlawful for health care providers, including doctors’ practices and hospitals that receive Federal financial assistance, to refuse to treat—or to otherwise discriminate against—an individual on the basis on their race, color, national origin, sex, age, or disability. The rule applies to both in-person and telehealth care, which is a new development.
  • The final rule for updating Section 504 includes language that recipients of federal funds must ensure effective communications with individuals with hearing, vision, and speech disabilities through the provision of auxiliary aids and services. This would include qualified interpreters,, assistive listening devices or systems, captioning, etc.

COVID-19’s Impact on Infant Hearing Milestones

According to 1-3-6 guidelines, all babies should have their hearing screened by one month of age, those who do not pass have a diagnostic evaluation by three months of age, and those who are identified as deaf and hard of hearing be enrolled in appropriate early intervention by six months of age.
