Listening February 2022
Tuesday 1 February
Listening @ ACI Alliance

Listening is a vehicle for us to share information on cochlear implants and hearing loss with hearing healthcare providers, adult CI recipients (and those exploring CI), parents and family members interested in CI, educators who work with deaf and hard of hearing children, and anyone wanting to learn more about cochlear implants.

ACI Alliance is a not-for-profit organization created with the purpose of eliminating barriers to cochlear implantation by sponsoring research, driving heightened awareness and advocating for improved access to cochlear implants for people of all ages. There is a wealth of information on our website.

Our work at ACI Alliance follows our mission encompassing research, advocacy, and awareness. Accordingly, Listening covers all three.

We encourage you to share sign-up details for this free e-newsletter with patients, family members, colleagues or anyone who may be interested.

Late Onset Hearing Loss Awareness
Late Onset Hearing Loss Awareness week was established in May 2021 to shine a spotlight on a population of young children who go unnoticed and undiagnosed because they passed the newborn hearing screen, but developed hearing loss later on. The goal of this campaign is to raise awareness so that families, childcare providers, preschools, pediatricians and others who observe or suspect missed developmental milestones in early childhood will ask the question, “Could this be linked to hearing loss?”

SAVE THE DATE!

International Cochlear Implant Day | February 25

Cochlear implants provide meaningful access to sound for those with more severe hearing loss. Even the most advanced hearing aids may not overcome the hearing difficulties associated with moderate to profound hearing loss. A cochlear implant bypasses the damaged areas of the cochlea and may provide improved hearing abilities for speech understanding and the perception of music and environmental sounds. #InternationalCochlearImplantDay

Special Education Services for Infants and Children with Cochlear Implants
One of the most common discussions among parents in online groups is “What services should I be pursuing for my child with a cochlear implant?  What exactly is an IFSP and what services are eligible? What should happen during transitions?" To address this important topic ACI Alliance is working with a special team conducting research on parent and professional needs and developing support materials to support the journey that families of children with cochlear implants have during early intervention and into the school years. Please help by taking the attached survey if you work directly with children with hearing loss in early intervention or in school settings, or by sharing this information and the survey link with families in your CI Center, school, or clinic. We are looking for the participation of both parents and professionals to help us develop important resources for all.
