Listening @ ACI Alliance | January 2026
Listening @ ACI Alliance

Listening is a vehicle for us to share information on cochlear implants and hearing loss with hearing healthcare providers, adult CI recipients (and those exploring CI), parents and family members interested in CI, educators who work with deaf and hard of hearing children, and anyone wanting to learn more about cochlear implants.

ACI Alliance is a not-for-profit organization created with the purpose of eliminating barriers to cochlear implantation by sponsoring research, driving heightened awareness and advocating for improved access to cochlear implants for people of all ages. There is a wealth of information on our website.

Our work at ACI Alliance follows our mission encompassing research, advocacy, and awareness. Accordingly, Listening covers all three.

We encourage you to share sign-up details for this free e-newsletter with patients, family members, colleagues or anyone who may be interested.

Special Interest Groups (SIGs)
One of the most significant aspects of our organizational growth is the member-driven push to establish and own special interest groups or SIGs, allowing members to meet together to explore and take action on important issues. These groups now number five, with three SIGs meeting virtually throughout the year and in-person at the annual conference. Expanding our focus beyond a simple definition of access to cochlear implantation is an important aspect of the organization’s current set of activities. All five of these SIGs will meet during CI2026 Chicago during the lunch Thursday and Friday at the conference - be sure to sign up during registration!

Advocacy

Tip of the Month: Homework never stops. A good advocate does research on their issue and the policy makers. How has the person voted before? Do they have a personal connection to cochlear implants? Knowing the answers to these questions will make you a better advocate.

Congenital CMV is the most common cause of non-hereditary hearing loss and is responsible for hearing loss in 1 in 5 hearing-impaired children with no other known risk factor or cause and 1 in 10 hearing-impaired children overall.

How CMV Affects Newborns

In the recent Health and Human Services (HHS) announcement, HHS Official: Newborn Screening Saves Lives and Empowers Families | Opinion - NewsweekDr. Stephanie Haridopolos highlighted how early screening of rare diseases is paramount for the health of newborns and children. Early detection of rare diseases can open a time limited window to lifechanging treatment for newborns. When this window is missed, opportunities for intervention may disappear altogether. However, one of the most common preventable causes of childhood hearing loss, congenital cytomegalovirus (cCMV), remains largely absent from newborn screening.

Reconsidering Cochlear Implant Candidacy in Asymmetric Hearing Loss: A Scoping Review of Functional and Quality-of-Life Gains
Asymmetric hearing loss (AHL)—defined as severe-to-profound hearing loss in one ear with better hearing in the other—can significantly impair communication and quality of life (QoL). Although cochlear implantation (CI) is an established treatment for sensorineural hearing loss, restrictive FDA and Medicare criteria often exclude AHL patients who could benefit. Emerging evidence suggests CI improves auditory function and QoL in this population.
