Listening @ ACI Alliance
Listening is a vehicle for us to share information on cochlear implants and hearing loss with hearing healthcare providers, adult CI recipients (and those exploring CI), parents and family members interested in CI, educators who work with deaf and hard of hearing children, and anyone wanting to learn more about cochlear implants.
ACI Alliance is a not-for-profit organization created with the purpose of eliminating barriers to cochlear implantation by sponsoring research, driving heightened awareness and advocating for improved access to cochlear implants for people of all ages. There is a wealth of information on our website.
Our work at ACI Alliance follows our mission encompassing research, advocacy, and awareness. Accordingly, Listening covers all three.
We encourage you to share sign-up details for this free e-newsletter with patients, family members, colleagues or anyone who may be interested.

Congenital Cytomegalovirus (cCMV) affects approximately 1 per every 200 births in the United States. It is the most common viral cause of birth defects and is the most common cause of non-hereditary hearing loss. The bipartisan, bicameral STOP CMV Act (S. 3864/H.R.7542) authorizes new funding to incentivize hospitals and other health care entities that care for children to screen babies for CMV within the first 21 days after birth. The bill also authorizes funding to collect data on CMV and to assist in the education and training of health care providers, patients, and the public. Finally, the legislation directs the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to conduct research into congenital CMV.

Missouri Medicaid Coverage Bill One Step Closer to Passage
Due to the superb work of our Champions in Missouri, a bill to provide Medicaid coverage for adults is one step closer to becoming law! Missouri clinicians recently testified before the key Senate Committee on the importance of this bill. Next steps are a vote in the Senate before moving to the Governor for final approval.

Socioeconomic and Ethnic Disparities Associated with Access to Cochlear Implantation for Severe-to-Profound Hearing Loss: A Multicenter Observational Study of UK Adults
This study aimed to explore referral patterns and whether there were any socioeconomic or ethnic associations with the likelihood of referral. The primary outcome was to determine factors influencing referral for implant assessment. The secondary outcome was to identify factors impacting whether healthcare professionals had discussed the option of referral.

Early-Stage Use of Hearing Aids Preserves Auditory Cortical Structure in Children with Sensorineural Hearing Loss
Hearing is critical to spoken language, cognitive, and social development. Little is known about how early auditory experiences impact the brain structure of children with bilateral sensorineural hearing loss. This study examined the influence of hearing aid use and residual hearing on the auditory cortex of children with severe to profound congenital sensorineural hearing loss.

School-age children undergoing cochlear implantation are needed for a study of listening-related fatigue. Participation is 100% virtual, requires the child and caregiver complete several 10-minute surveys before and after implantation, and includes compensation (Amazon gift cards). Children must be 5-17 years old, speak/understand English or Spanish, and be scheduled to receive a cochlear implant within the next six months. Children getting their 1st or 2nd implant and those receiving bilateral implants are eligible for this study. Complete the interest form below and one of our study team members will reach out with more information.
