Listening @ ACI Alliance
Listening is a vehicle for us to share information on cochlear implants and hearing loss with hearing healthcare providers, adult CI recipients (and those exploring CI), parents and family members interested in CI, educators who work with deaf and hard of hearing children, and anyone wanting to learn more about cochlear implants.
ACI Alliance is a not-for-profit organization created with the purpose of eliminating barriers to cochlear implantation by sponsoring research, driving heightened awareness and advocating for improved access to cochlear implants for people of all ages. There is a wealth of information on our website.
Our work at ACI Alliance follows our mission encompassing research, advocacy, and awareness. Accordingly, Listening covers all three.
We encourage you to share sign-up details for this free e-newsletter with patients, family members, colleagues or anyone who may be interested.

The “Find a Clinic” map is a helpful ACI Alliance website feature for patients, hearing healthcare professionals, and primary care physicians who wish to locate a clinic specializing in cochlear implant care. Those CI centers that are Organizational Members are listed by state with clinic information and contact details. This is one of the most visited areas of the website.

Perfection is the Enemy of Progress

Progress after cochlear implantation can be slow and confusing for adults. For perfectionists, it can be frustrating. Naama's Blog addresses this with specific recommendations for post CI rehabilitation.

Friends of the Congressional Hearing Health Caucus (FCHHC): Support for Hearing Screening
ACI Alliance participates in coalitions to advance common goals with other hearing heath organizations. The Senate Appropriations Committee recently released its proposed FY2022 LHHS bill and report. Building on our efforts in the House, we are pleased to share that the hearing screening language supported by the FCHHC has been included in the Senate report as well. The bill language acknowledges the need for hearing screening in older adults and urges NIH to provide an update on research for older adults across the NIH including needs and gaps identified by the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force.

Captioning at Movie Theaters
AMC Theaters recently announced they will bring open captioning showtimes to many of their theaters around the country. Open captioning is an on-screen text display of the words and sounds that are automatically placed on screen. ACI Alliance supports this effort to provide accessibility for people with hearing loss as well as provide clarity for all movie-goers. In 2018, ACI Alliance supported a similar legislative effort in Washington, DC to encourage more open captioning at the city’s movie theaters. You can find those comments here and find more information on ACI Alliance advocacy efforts here.

Dr. John Niparko Memorial Lecture: The Evolution of Cochlear Implant Care
The John Niparko Memorial Lecture was established in 2017 to recognize Dr. Niparko’s enduring commitment to cochlear implant research and clinical care, and to honor his significant contributions to the field. The lecture is given annually at the ACI Alliance annual clinical research conference. The lecture shares the work of prominent scientists and clinicians and highlights the connected care that was so important to Dr. Niparko as a clinician, scientist, mentor and advocate. Dr. René Gifford, an audiologist and researcher, will give the Niparko Lecture at CI2022 DC in May 2022 in Washington, DC on “The Evolution of Cochlear Implant Care.” Videos of past Niparko Lectures can be found on the ACI Alliance website and more information on Dr. Gifford and on CI2022 DC is available here.
