Listening @ ACI Alliance
Listening is a vehicle for us to share information on cochlear implants and hearing loss with hearing healthcare providers, adult CI recipients (and those exploring CI), parents and family members interested in CI, educators who work with deaf and hard of hearing children, and anyone wanting to learn more about cochlear implants.
ACI Alliance is a not-for-profit organization created with the purpose of eliminating barriers to cochlear implantation by sponsoring research, driving heightened awareness and advocating for improved access to cochlear implants for people of all ages. There is a wealth of information on our website.
Our work at ACI Alliance follows our mission encompassing research, advocacy, and awareness. Accordingly, Listening covers all three.
We encourage you to share sign-up details for this free e-newsletter with patients, family members, colleagues or anyone who may be interested.

Listening—Language—Literacy Zoom Webinar | October 18 7PM
This seminar will involve three experts—each with a specific focus on language learning and reading. To learn a language—be it aural or sign—children must have exposure to language that is rich in quantity and quality. Language nutrition emphasizes the importance of parents, other family members, and educators to talk, interact, read, and engage with their children. This is important for all children, but it is critical for children who are deaf and hard of hearing. Research demonstrates the impact of such parenting practices on literacy and a child’s future success.
About the speakers:
- Donna Sorkin, Executive Director of the American Cochlear Implant Alliance
- Dr. Roberta Golinkoff, University of Delaware; Professor of Education, Linguistics,
and Psychology
- Dianne Nichols, State of Delaware, Retired Reading Specialist and Current Reading

Spotlight on Sudden Hearing Loss
Noted otolaryngologist Michael Hoffer, MD, Miller School of Medicine, University of Miami, describes Sudden Hearing Loss (or "sudden deafness"): an unexplained, rapid loss of hearing in one ear either all at once or over a few days. It's important to seek emergency care promptly because every day of delay reduces your chance of recovery. This message about hearing health is brought to you by the American Hearing Research Foundation. It is being aired on Public Broadcasting stations across the U.S.

ACI Alliance Supports Communications, Video, and Technology Accessibility (CVTA) Act
ACI Alliance has joined other organizations as a supporter of the Communications, Video, and Technology Accessibility (CVTA) Act. If passed, the legislation would ensure individuals with disabilities have equal access to mainstream communication platforms and the technology services needed to participate in professional, educational, recreational, and civic spaces. The CVTA bolsters standards for television programming and emergency communication, expands accessibility requirements—including closed captions and audio descriptions—to online platforms and video conferencing services, and equips the federal government with the ability to improve accessibility of emerging technologies. Please take a few minutes to send complete the Action Alert set up to urge Members of Congress to support these bills.

A Multicenter Clinical Trial to Address Cochlear Implantation of Children with Single-Sided Deafness
Children with single-sided deafness (SSD) have impaired binaural cues, which degrades communication in daily life. This study of children 4-14 with SSD will provide suggested guidelines for candidacy, assessment, and outcomes. The study team is seeking additional children to participate in the SSD study.

National Trends in Cochlear Implantation Across the Department of the Defense: A Case for Inclusion as a General Otolaryngology Core Competency
With ongoing national expansions in cochlear implantation (CI) candidacy criteria, more patients qualify for CI today than ever before. Among US veterans and military service members, the prevalence of qualifying degrees of hearing loss secondary to occupational noise exposure exceeds the general population. The primary aim of the current work was to evaluate CI trends across the military health system.

Investigating Socioeconomic Barriers to Cochlear Implantation
This research explored socioeconomic disparities in cochlear implant evaluation (CIE) referrals and cochlear implantation. The study found that non-English-speaking patients were referred for evaluations at lower rates than English-speaking patients, and that patients who met the CI candidacy criteria with private insurance, or Medicare with private insurance supplement, had higher rates of cochlear implantation than those with Medicare or Medicaid. The authors find that additional research is needed to implement strategies for more inclusive treatment.

Essential Elements of Best Practice for Cochlear Implant Fitting in Children: Considerations for Behavioral Methods of Verification and Validation
Recently released guidance from Knowledge and Implementation in Pediatric Audiology (KiPA) provides clinicians with a description of essential components to consider for best practices for cochlear implant (CI) programming (fitting) in children using behavioral methods. Using a systematic approach provides the clinician with an opportunity to cycle back to previous processes when measured outcomes are not consistent with clinical expectations, and this document concentrates on the verification of audibility and comfort steps in this process.
